FAQs on Endocrinology

What Is Endocrinology?

Endocrinology is the study of medicine that deals with the body’s endocrine system and the diseases that affect it. The endocrine system is a network of glands responsible for producing hormones, which in turn control the body’s organs, metabolism, reproduction, mood, growth, and development. A disease of this system can therefore affect a number of basic bodily functions. An endocrinologist’s job is to restore hormone balance when an imbalance has occurred.

What Is The Endocrine System?

The endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete the hormones responsible for many important bodily functions. The endocrine glands include:

  • Adrenal glands
  • Hypothalamus
  • Islet cells in the pancreas
  • Ovaries
  • Parathyroid
  • Pineal gland
  • Pituitary gland
  • Testes
  • Thymus
  • Thyroid

What Diseases Do Endocrinologists Treat?

Endocrinologists treat a very wide range of conditions. Some of the most common endocrine diseases include:

  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Obesity
  • Menopause
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Hypertension
  • Thyroid disease
  • Excessive or insufficient production of hormones
  • Some cancers
  • Infertility

What Causes Endocrine Disorders?

Endocrine disorders can develop in one of the following ways:

  • Glands produce too many or too little hormones, creating a hormonal imbalance
  • Tumors or lesions form in the endocrine system, which can have an effect on hormone levels
  • An infection forms in the body, which can have an effect on hormone levels

How Are Endocrine Disorders Treated?

An endocrinologist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to pinpoint the right course of treatment for a patient. Occasionally, an endocrine disorder will not produce any symptoms at all, or they are mild enough that no treatment is needed. However, if symptoms are bothersome, an endocrinologist may:

  • Administer synthetic hormones to correct imbalances
  • Perform surgery/radiation therapy to remove a growth or tumor

What Can I Expect From A Visit With An Endocrinologist?

An endocrinologist will run blood and urine tests to check hormone levels, and may order imaging tests to locate a tumor or nodule. Routine blood work may be required to see if your medication is working or if it needs to be adjusted.

Once a diagnosis has been reached, the endocrinologist will work with your primary care physician to create a comprehensive treatment plan to manage your symptoms.
