Primary Care Physician - Pittsburgh, PA

Primary Care is dedicated to the care of people across all ages, genders, for all parts of the body. Through this branch of medicine, patients and their families can receive medical care that spans their entire lives while also developing strong relationships with our family care team. At Premier Medical Associates, our practice also offers select subspecialties of primary care to enhance your care, including  primary care and internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, orthopedic manipulations, and geriatrics.

Sometimes, our health reaches a point where basic preventive care is no longer enough to help you live a healthy, happy life. For adults in need of specialized primary care that focuses on treating adult illnesses, diseases, and chronic conditions, primary care is often a more suitable choice than a family practitioner.

At Premier Medical Associates, we understand how health needs can evolve and change with time. Our primary care practitioners will work with you to realize a comprehensive overview of your individual goals, habits, medications, and more. We place special focus on preventive care, health screenings, treatment and management of diseases and chronic conditions as part of a personalized plan. FAQs on Primary Care

What Is Primary Care?

Primary Care (formerly called family practice) is a branch of medicine designed to provide basic healthcare to all members of a family, regardless of their age. Your primary pare physician is trained to deliver the best possible care by evaluating you as a whole, interconnected person, as opposed to treating specific organs or body parts.

What’s The Difference Between Primary Care and Internal Medicine?

Primary Care is centered around treating the family social unit for all health conditions, whereas internal medicine is centered on the unique needs of adults for specific organs (ex. reproductive, cardiovascular, etc.) Essentially, a primary pare specialist is trained to evaluate, diagnose and treat the whole spectrum of medical conditions that could occur to any member of a family. Whether the issue is related to behavioral health or dermatological issues, a primary care doctor is equipped to provide the appropriate course of care (and can provide a referral to advanced specialist care as needed).

The differences between these two branches of medicine may seem minimal, since the majority of patients both for internists and family practitioners are adults. However, these two types of doctors go through different types of training (and family member doctors often see patients of all ages).

Through their training, an internist has chosen to focus specifically on a range of sciences that allows them to care for adult patients, including ophthalmology, psychiatry, rheumatology, and endocrinology. So if you are an adult who wants comprehensive care from one doctor, internal medicine may be the right choice for you.

NOTE: At Premier, we've combined the specialties to create one primary care division.

What Are Some Of My Health Risks As An Adult?

As our bodies age, we become more vulnerable to certain types of conditions and diseases. Some of the most common risks and age-related ailments are:

  • Deteriorating eyesight (degeneration, cataracts, etc)
  • Hearing loss
  • Chronic migraines
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • High cholesterol
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer, especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia
